Haas students will hear how global organizations can solve social issues in a talk Oct. 4 by Klaus M. Leisinger, president of the Novartis Foundation for Sustainable Development, a Swiss nonprofit focusing on international health cooperation and corporate responsibility.
Leisinger's talk, titled “The Partnership Puzzle: How Global Organizations Work to Solve Social Issues,” will run from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Room. It will be followed by a one-hour reception in the Bank of America Forum. The event kicks off this year's Schwab Charitable Philanthropy Speaker Series.
Over the past 25 years, the Novartis Foundation has pursued a poverty-reduction strategy, aiming to cure leprosy, malaria, and TB in poor countries. In addition to leading the foundation, Leisinger serves as an adviser to national and international organizations such as the World Bank and the World Economic Forum. He is also a sociology professor at the University of Basel, where he pursues research and teaches a wide range of topics related to international development and health policy as well as business ethics, corporate responsibility, and business and human rights.
Leisinger's talk will be followed by two other Schwab Series events. On Nov. 21, a nonprofit consulting industry panel will share experiences and advice on everything from recruiting, opportunities, lifestyle, and life after nonprofit consulting. On Jan. 26, another panel discussion will revolve around building a roadmap for social impact investing.
