More Hands-On Learning Classes for Undergrads

Haas undergraduates can take advantage of an additional experiential learning class this fall led by a Wall Street consulting firm that teaches about valuing companies, financial modeling, and leveraged buyouts.

The firm, Training the Street, will offer the class Introduction to Corporate Valuation at the Haas School on Oct. 31.

“The goal is to help students heading to Wall Street and finance to complete practical, real-life examples,” says Janet Amador, the Haas Undergraduate Program's director of admissions and operations. “Students actually get the practice, with really specific, hands-on work.’’

The corporate valuation course is the second experiential learning opportunity offered by the Undergraduate Program this fall, following a new course called Charisma and Leadership: The Science of Trust, Influence, and Persuasion. A tripling of funds from the Dean's Office is enabling Berkeley-Haas to expand its experiential learning offerings to undergraduates this year.

Only 100 students will be accepted into the corporate valuation class. Sign-ups for seniors began last Thursday in the Undergraduate Program Office. Juniors may sign up beginning Oct. 19. Sign-ups end Oct. 21. There is a $25 deposit due at sign-up.

"There's always a waiting list,’’ Amador warns."These classes are extremely popular.’’

In the spring, Training the Street will offer two more courses: Financial Modeling and Mergers and Acquisitions/Leveraged Buyout Analysis.

Brandon Zeman, BS 11, took the corporate valuation workshop last year. He learned to take industrial averages of other companies, and then used that information to price IPOs for mergers and acquisitions. “It was very useful,’’ Zeman says, "especially if you’re an investment banker or working for a Fortune 500 company."
