Four panelists will discuss how to use philanthropy as a competitive advantage in the world of financial advising on March 16 as part of the Schwab Charitable Speaker Series.

The event, organized by the Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership, will run from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Wells Fargo Room.

The panelists are:

  • Todd Ahlsten, BS 94, chief investment officer of socially responsible investment firm Parnassus Investment
  • Russ Hall, MS 75, co-founder of Palo Alto-based Legacy Ventures
  • Randy Manley, MBA 80, founder of the Make It Real Foundation and principal of Alamo-based Lodestar
  • Sean Stannard-Stockton, CEO of Tactical Philanthropy Advisors.

The panel also will address ways of encouraging clients to make philanthropic as well as financial investments.

Each speaker comes to the subject from a slightly different perspective. Stannard-Stockton helps donors with between $1 million and $50 million or more to give away, set up, and administer private foundations and donor-advised funds.

Manley, an attorney and financial adviser, founded Make It Real Foundation in 2008 to allow philanthropists to travel, both domestically and internationally, to see their charitable donations in action.

Hall has created a fund of funds that invests in venture capital firms and is geared toward foundation investors and individual investors who want to donate to charitable organizations.

Ahlsten, portfolio manager for the Parnassus Equity Income Fund, was named by Barron’s as one of the Top 100 Managers in 2003, 2004, and 2007.
