New Book Measures Impact of Offshoring

Globalization, economic growth, and technological development interact to impact employment, but the effects vary largely from country to country and among different social and economic classes, according to a new book edited by Dwight Jaffee, Ashok Bardhan, and Cynthia Kroll.

The Oxford Handbook of Offshoring and Global Employment (Oxford University Press, May 2013) is a comprehensive collection of essays by leading academics and policymakers that assesses how global economic changes have affected employment opportunities. The authors represent 20 developed and developing countries, including China, Japan, Denmark, South Africa, and Mexico, as well as the European Union.

The book was edited by three researchers from the Haas School’s Fisher Center for Real Estate and Urban Economics: Professor and Fisher Center Co-Chair Dwight Jaffee; Cynthia Kroll, former senior regional economist and executive director for staff research; and Ashok Bardhan, former senior research associate.

The book answers a wide range of questions, including:

• How do different types of offshoring and global linkages impact employment?
• How is the skill mix of the labor force impacted by globalization?
• How do institutional structures and regulations influence the outcome of globalization in developed and developing countries?
