Educational technology pioneer

Mike Wood, the creator of LeapFrog Enterprises, which transformed how children worldwide learn, passed away on April 10 at age 72.
A California native, Wood earned a BA from Stanford then a joint MBA and JD from Haas and UC Hastings College of the Law (now UC Law SF). He practiced corporate law from 1978 to 1994.
Wood’s inspiration for educational innovation began when teaching his son how to read. He left his legal career and co-founded LeapFrog Enterprises, the company behind the iconic LeapPad, which offered interactive, talking books. It was an instant success, helping millions of children learn how to read and making LeapFrog one of the fastest-growing toy companies in history. Later, Wood founded and sold another reading platform, SmartyAnts. He continued to inspire young readers after retiring, volunteering as a tutor in Marin City, Calif.
A Builder of Berkeley for his generosity to the university, Wood also served as a UC Berkeley Foundation trustee.
