LWV candidate forums

Local League of Women Voters chapters are hosting virtual candidate forums ahead of the March 5 primary elections for a couple crowded races.

The LWV Southwest Silicon Valley is inviting candidates for Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian’s District 5 seat to a Jan. 31 forum starting at 7 p.m. District 5 includes portions of San Jose.

Candidates include Mountain View Councilmember Margaret Abe-Koga, California State Board of Equalization Chair Sally Lieber, former Cupertino mayor Barry Chang, El Camino Healthcare District director Peter C. Fung and Los Altos Holdings Inc. founder Sandy Sans.

Simitian and other candidates for the District 16 Congressional seat being vacated by Anna Eshoo can participate in a Feb. 3 forum sponsored by League of Women Voters of Palo Alto. District 16 includes portions of San Jose.
Simitian recently received Eshoo’s endorsement. Other candidates include state Assemblymember Evan Low, Palo Alto City Councilmember Julie Lythcott-Haims, former San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, tech entrepreneur and veteran Peter Dixon, ex-Saratoga city councilmember Rishi Kumar, Stanford graduate student Joby Bernstein and attorney Ahmed Mostafa. Two Republicans are also vying for the seat: Menlo Park Mayor Peter Ohtaki and Karl Ryan.

Candidates talk climate

The San Mateo, Silicon Valley North and Silicon Valley South chapters of Citizens’ Climate Lobby are hosting two virtual panels with the 10 candidates running for Anna Eshoo’s District 16 Congressional seat on Thursday, Feb. 1, and Monday, Feb. 5, 7-8:30 p.m. both nights. The free panels are geared toward finding out what the candidates will do on matters pertaining to climate and the environment.
