Education Case Competition Focuses on LA but Goes International

The fifth annual Haas Education Leadership Case Competition on Feb. 18 and Feb. 19 in the Wells Fargo Room will focus on the Los Angeles Unified School District, the second-largest public school district in the country.

And, for the first time, the competition is going international, with one of the 11 competing teams coming from the London Business School.

Jason Dolan, co-president of the Haas Education Leadership Club, which organizes the competition, wouldn’t divulge many details about what teams will be doing to help the Los Angeles schools implement new educational strategies. That’s because he didn’t want to give teams a head start on their efforts.

But Dolan did say this: “LAUSD really needs to find a way to gain public support for them to be successful in their new initiatives.”

Haas Education Leadership Club Co-president Aaron Sokol was in charge of selecting LA Unified for the competition, led the case-writing effort, and co-coordinated the event.

The competition is designed to benefit the nation’s public schools by developing innovative solutions to modern problems and to help train young leaders in education reform. Last year, the competition focused on helping Pittsburgh schools. Teams came from UC Berkeley, USC, Carnegie Mellon, Stanford Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, Yale School of Management, MIT, and others.

This year’s donors are The Mind Trust, The Broad Foundation, Teach for America, Education Pioneers, The Rogers Family Foundation, and The Parthenon Group.
