He earned a PhD and MS in economics from the University of Wisconsin and a bachelor's degree from Amherst College.

Tchistyi joined the school's Finance and Real Estate groups in 2008. His research focuses on financial innovations, mortgages and mortgage-backed securities, dynamic contracting, and corporate finance. Tchistyi earned his PhD in business administration at Stanford after earning undergraduate and master's degrees in applied mathematics and physics at the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and an MA in economics at the New Economic School in Moscow.
