With women making up half of the workforce but just a small fraction of C-suite executives, the 2012 Women in Leadership Conference on March 3 will focus on how successful woman can bring others up with them.
A sell-out crowd is expected at the conference, themed “Beyond Mentorship: Women Championing Women,” at Berkeley-Haas. Now in its 16th year, it’s the school’s longest-running student-organized conference.
“We have a bold theme this year and are lucky to have some tremendous women joining us as keynotes, panelists, and participants,” says Rachel Sherman, MBA/MPH 12, who is co-chairing the conference with Leisha Leclair, also MBA/MPH 12.
“We want to celebrate those women who use their influence to advocate on the behalf of the women that follow them, and actively sponsor the next generation of leaders," Sherman adds. "These women are more than just role models; they are the champions who provide the environment, opportunities, and personal and professional support to fellow women in their industry."
This year’s keynote speakers are women who have combined their passions for fashion and music with a knack for leadership. Pandora Executive Vice President Jessica Steel (pictured above) has led business and corporate development at the Internet music company since 2004, expanding the service to smart phones, connected TVs, Blu-ray players, and the auto industry. She’s also a singer-songwriter who has released two full-length albums.
Jessica Herrin (right), the second keynote speaker, is the CEO and founder of Stella & Dot, a company that has helped thousands of women become “flexible entrepreneurs,” selling designer jewelry and purses from their homes. Herrin, who previously founded WeddingChan
nel.com, started Stella & Dot in her living room and built it into a company with $100 million in sales in less than seven years.
The agenda includes eight industry panels followed by a networking lunch, and eight afternoon panels covering such topics as Building Your Brand and Crashing Stereotypes.
