A new program designed to help Berkeley post-docs and graduate students turn an idea into a real business will launch Sept. 22 with a workshop titled "Creativity, Innovation, and Opportunity Recognition."
The workshop is the first in a series planned by the new Berkeley Post-doc Entrepreneurs Program, launched by Berkeley's Visiting Scholars and Post-doc Affairs Program in collaboration with the Lester Center for Entrepreneurship and California Institute for Quantitative Biosciences (QB3), a consortium of UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, and UC San Francisco.
The Sept. 22 workshop will run from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Berdahl Auditorium (Room 105) in Stanley Hall. Haas alumnus Peter Fiske, MBA 02, president and CEO of PAX Mixer, will coordinate a discussion with two invited speakers:
- KT Moortgat, BA 90 (Physics), a partner at venture capital firm Mohr Davidow and the founding director of the Center for BioEntrepreneurship at UC San Francisco.
- David Hanzel, BA 78 (Physiology), PhD 89 (Physiology), a partner at early-stage funder X/Seed Capital and physiologist and protein biophysicist who has held scientific and business positions at startups and large corporations.
The Berkeley Post-doc Entrepreneurs Program will provide post-doc and graduate students with the opportunity to learn about legal issues and financing, and earn a certificate upon completion of selected courses. The program also will offer the opportunity for students and post-docs to discuss ideas, form teams, and evaluate ideas tapping the guidance of established entrepreneurs.
