Conference to Focus on Asia’s Shifting Role in Global Economy, Feb. 20

Top executives in Asia will explore changes and opportunities in Asia as well as the region's impact on the global economy at the 10th annual Berkeley Asia Business Conference Feb. 20 at the Haas School.

Haas Professor and presidential economic adviser Laura Tyson, who helped launch the first conference a decade ago as dean, will give short remarks before an address from keynote speaker Lim Siong Guan, former top civil servant of Singapore and currently group president of the Government of Singapore Investment Corp., one of the world's largest sovereign wealth funds.

The conference also will feature three other keynote speeches by Arun Sarin, MBA 78, senior adviser at global asset manager Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and former CEO of Vodafone; Scott Matlock, BS 88, Morgan Stanley's chairman of mergers and acquisitions in Asia; and Joi Ito, an entrepreneur and venture capitalist out of Dubai and Singapore who serves as CEO of Creative Commons and general partner of Neoteny Labs.

The theme of the 2010 conference, “Asia: Shifting the Global Center of Gravity,” seeks to provocatively discuss whether major business and commercial activities are increasingly focused on the Asian region. Moving beyond just an intellectual debate on this state of affairs, the conference also seeks to help attendees take concrete action in repositioning their careers for such a future.

Nearly 500 people are expected to attend, which is 100 percent student-organized. This year's conference co-chairs are Dwight Crabtree, Justin Tsai, and Khan Yow, all MBA 10.
