Berkeley MBA Students Win Finance Case Competition

Even the largest single snowfall in Dallas history and a delayed presentation schedule didn’t faze a team of Berkeley MBA students who won the 4th Annual Finance Case Competition held at Southern Methodist University’s (SMU) Cox School of Business, February 11-12.

Ben Avenia-Tapper, Eric Flohr, Stephane Miel, and Justin Owen, all MBA 11, won the $4,000 first prize in the competition, which featured an actual credit request received by competition sponsor Wells Fargo: The teams were to assess Radio Shack’s credit worthiness in the face of a restructuring. Participating schools included SMU’s Cox, Oklahoma University’s Price College of Business, and Washington University’s Olin Business School.

Campus closure due to the snow delayed final presentations until Friday afternoon, leaving the Berkeley team to present their case, then make a break for the airport—where notification of victory came via cell phone as the team was boarding its departing plane.
