Lloyd’s of London Chairman to Speak on Risk Management, Nov. 30

Peter Levene, chairman of Lloyd's of London, will talk on financial risk management in light of the global economic crisis at 12:30 p.m. Nov. 30 in the Wells Fargo Room as part of the Dean's Speaker Series.

Levene, who became chairman of Lloyd's in November 2002, also will explain the need for aspiring business leaders to understand financial risk management. A British lord, Levene will share some of his personal leadership lessons and his global perspective on business. Lunch will be served at the event, and registration is required.

Lloyd's is an insurance marketplace for a society of members–corporate and individual–who insure complex and specialist risks, from oil rigs to celebrity body parts. Before Lloyd's, Levene worked as vice chairman of Deutsche Bank in the UK and also worked at Wasserstein Perella and Morgan Stanley.

Levene, a member of the House of Lords Select Committee for Economic Affairs, started his career in the defense industry with United Scientific Holdingsa substantial supplier to UK and overseas Ministries of Defence. He subsequently held a number of government posts in the UK, including chief of defence procurement and adviser to the secretary of state for the environment, to the president of the Board of Trade, to the chancellor of the Exchequer (part of the United Kingdom that collects revenue), and to the prime minister on efficiency and effectiveness.

Levene is an alderman of the City of London and has served as sheriff and lord mayor of London. (Lord mayor of London serves as an ambassador for all UK-based financial and professional services and is not the same thing as mayor of London.) He received a knighthood in 1989.
