Human Rights Watch Leader to Speak Sept. 12

Human Rights Watch Executive Director Kenneth Roth, who leads one of the world’s foremost human rights organizations with 280 staff members monitoring conditions in nearly 90 nations, will speak in the Wells Fargo Room from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 12.

Roth will discuss how events in the Middle East have impacted global human rights during the past decade, from the days following the 9/11 attacks to this year’s momentous Arab Spring demonstrations that swept across the region and into North Africa. He also will share his experiences gained during a 14-year career with the organization.

Based on the insight of researchers in trouble spots around the globe, Human Rights Watch aims to expose abuse and, through pressure, increase the cost to governments of cracking down on peaceful demonstrators. The nonprofit also works to foster multilateral cooperation between governments, the United Nations, regional groups, corporations, and financial institutions to promote human rights worldwide.

Roth has written extensively on human rights abuses, devoting special attention to international justice, counterterrorism, foreign policies of the major powers, and the United Nations. Before joining Human Rights Watch in 1987, he served as a federal prosecutor in New York and for the Iran-Contra investigation in Washington, D.C.

Roth’s talk is presented by the Haas School’s Center for Nonprofit and Public Leadership and co-sponsored by the Dean’s Speaker Series and the Human Rights Center at Berkeley Law.

Tickets, available at http://bit.ly/cnpl-humanrights, are free for Berkeley students and faculty, $10 for Berkeley alumni, and $15 for the general public.
