The Haas community is invited to join Dean Rich Lyons and UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas Dirks in honoring Bay Area philanthropist Douglas E. Goldman, MD, BA 74, as the 2013 Business Leader at the 12th annual Haas Gala on Nov. 15 in San Francisco.
The black-tie-optional event, to be held at the Westin St. Francis Hotel, will start with a reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and an award presentation. At 9:30 p.m. there will be an after-party and dessert as well as a special soirée for the inaugural class of the Berkeley MBA for Executives Program and alumni of the Berkeley-Columbia Executive MBA Program.
Goldman, the fourth of five generations of Cal alumni in his family, is being honored for his service, leadership, and longstanding commitment to his alma mater. He has remained engaged in the university since his days on campus when, in 1974, he earned a BA in psychology.
"Doug Goldman brings passion and insight to his role on our Haas Board," says Dean Rich Lyons. "We are privileged to have such a dedicated and generous supporter carrying on his family's long tradition of giving back to the community."
Goldman is chairman and founder of Certain Inc., a leading global provider of enterprise-level, event-management software solutions. In addition to serving as a member of the advisory board at Haas (which is named after his grandfather, Walter Haas), Goldman is a trustee of the UC Berkeley Foundation.
As part of the Campaign for Berkeley, Goldman and his wife, Lisa, gave $10 million to Cal Athletics at a time when the intercollegiate program was in need of financial stimulus. The Goldmans’ gift was recognized with the naming of the Lisa and Douglas Goldman Plaza outside the newly renovated Memorial Stadium; it is their hope that the plaza will provide a student gathering place as vital as Sproul Plaza.
Goldman also is a founding member of the advisory board for the Richard and Rhoda Goldman School of Public Policy (named after his parents). With his wife, he has underwritten fellowships and student-led programs.
In addition to honoring Goldman at the Gala, Haas will present its Leading Through Innovation Award to Kristin Groos Richmond and Kirsten Saenz Tobey, both MBA 06, co-founders of Revolution Foods, which now serves 1 million healthy meals every week to students in nearly 1,000 schools across the U.S.
Haas also will present its annual Raymond E. Miles Alumni Service Award to Marty McMahon, MBA 01, for dedication and commitment to alumni outreach and philanthropy.
